I present to you, my take on the Ferryman of the Dead.
I've wanted to paint Charon for a long time. In this illustration, I focused on visual storytelling. I wanted a person who doesn't know Charon to be able to figure out who he is just by looking at the painting. Late in the development phase, I decided to change the background from the cave to the gates of the underworld and I like how it turned out.
In Greek mythology, Charon is the ferryman who transports the dead across the river Acheron to the underworld. To use his services a gold coin was required otherwise you risked wandering along the shores of the river for a hundred years. Will you pay?
